Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the application of evidence-based principles of behavior to improve socially significant behavior. A functional assessment is completed to determine hypothesized variables responsible for behavior change, and modifications are then made in order to increase, decrease, or replace target behaviors.
ABA Services should be considered a long term investment in which our clients benefit from services not only in our presence, but also in our absence (and when services discontinue). Achieving maximum and long-term success for each client is the ultimate goal and this is incorporated by programming for generalization from the very beginning of service delivery.
The Team responsible for carrying out behavior change procedures will receive ongoing training about how to implement the plan, how to collect data, and who to contact with questions or concerns. The Team members may vary but will always include the client, and may include family member(s), residential support staff, educational staff, day program staff, etc. There is a huge emphasis on collaboration and teamwork during the process of implementing ABA Services and the rewards and payoff of the partnership are invaluable.
Behavior Analysts use methods that have been proven to work to help teach new skills and reduce challenging behaviors. Data is collected on the behaviors of interest daily in order to see what is working, and what may need revision. Looking at the function of challenging behaviors and then teaching replacement behaviors for the individual, as well as proactive and reactive strategies for team members, helps to maintain the same function--but in a socially acceptable way. ABA can work for anyone! The approach is always tailored to each individual’s needs. And the goal is to always improve the client’s well-being with the most applied, effective, and valid methods available.
